ORIENTATION
TO CAREERS & TECHNOLOGY
will
introduce students to the many uses of technology in careers.
Students will begin with a personal survey of skills and
interests using the Career Futures software developed
by Bridges (used in high schools nationally).
The
90 minute class time will be structured as follows:
15
minutes - DEAR - Drop Everything and Read
05 minutes - timed writing on computer
10 minutes - keyboarding practice
30
minutes - lecture and class discussion
30 minutes - computer research/worksheets
Keyboarding
skills are critical to a student's success in later academic
years. Here at RMS we feel it is imperative to begin keyboarding
skills in the 6th grade before bad tendencies become bad
habits.
Students
will be assessed in the beginning of the term for their
keyboard skill level and will work towards increasing their
speed and accuracy throughout the year.
Students
will be encouraged by receiving bonus points for each 5
WPM increase in speed and accuracy assessed during the formal
keyboarding test given twice each term.
Should
a student reach the target WPM at any time while demonstrating
proper keyboard technique, they will be excused from further
testing.
During
Term 3
topics covered in class will include an overview of computer
etiquette and ethics, plagiarism, and copyright.
Learning
basic computer skills will be reviewed. Students will learn
basic directory and file structure as they are required
to save their work (including DEAR summaries)in their personal
folder daily.
Students
will continue their DEAR and keyboarding skills daily. Timed
writing will be come more focused on specific prompts. Students
will review notetaking and outlining skills in preparation
for their individual research project.
A
2-page paper on the career of their choice along with a
multimedia presentation illustrating their choice will complete
this exploration of Careers & Technology. Students will
complete a resume and dress up for a job interview at the
end of the term.
