Welcome all students, parents and guardians!

As the RMS Technology Coordinator I look forward to working with you and your child this year to introduce you to the world of technology.

Each year not only do I have a class of 6th grade students, I also have developed the school's first Tech Team where students work on school computers solving hardware and software problems and learn other real-life skills.

Students who are selected to work with me in either the 7th or 8th grade usually come from one of my previous 6th grade classes. If you have that desire or the ability to know more than your average adult, please let me know.

Do you have what it takes to be a tech support person? Let's find out.

ELECTRONIC PORTFOLIOS

Electronic portfolios of student work will be a main focal point for the Technology Magnet students. Begin creating your best work now in 6th grade and walk out of RMS in 8th grade with three years of your best work in digital format whether it be essays, research papers, slide shows, or web sites. Realize that quality work is recognized wherever you go.

IINTRODUCTION TO COMPUTERS - FIRST SEMESTER

We will begin our school year students will be introduced to the "innards" of a computer. Both hardware and software components will be explained and explored. Computers will be dismantled and components will be inspected and compared to current versions.

During Term 2 students will learn PowerPoint and/or HTML web programming. Students will work with a partner to research and complete a multimedia project based on "What Every Student Should Know About Computers" to be posted on the web.

Keyboarding skills, word processing, Internet research and presentation methods will be integral to ths course. By the end of the year, students will be expected to improve their keyboarding skills by 20% over their initial assessment.

ORIENTATIoN TO CAREERS IN TECHNOLOGY - SECOND SEMESTER

After Winter Break our 6th grade technology classes begin an Orientation to Careers in Technology. This class offers students an introduction to the many ways that technology is used in careers. It engages the student by allowing them the opportunity to dream, investigate your future options while at the same time learn computer skills such as word processing, Internet research, keyboarding, and presentation methods whether it be slide shows or web pages.

During Term 4 after completing their individual investigations of technology in occupations, students will complete a research paper/multimedia presentation describing their occupation of choice. Parents, guardians, and business partners will be invited to class to describe the uses of technology in real world occupations.
