Roosevelt Middle School Magnet Programs

RMS Engineering Magnet

Course of Study:

Pre-Engineering 1 addresses aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, and electrical engineering where students are taught practical applications of power systems, basic physics principles, computer-controlled technology and development of mental engineering concepts and theories.

Pre-Engineering II covers practical applications of basic physics principles taught in Pre-Engineering I are expanded with robotics, automation systems, and engineering conceptsintegrated with science, mathematics and physics.

Pre-Engineering III
provides a rigorous study of engineering concepts. Students work independently and in teams to develop projects in transportation and structures (mousetrap cars, rockets, airplanes, and bridges). As a culminating event, students participate in the Engineering Olympiad to see how their projects compare to other engineering students.

Tech Lab 2002 (Pre-Engineering and Physics Lab)--Students are exposed to professional software that integrates all the sciences and are forced into higher-order thinking to develop, build, and experiment with hands-on activities that are real-life challenges. The course covers topics such as lasers, architecture, publishing, sound, product design, vehicle design, transport phenomenon, fabrication, photo types modeling imaging, and much more.

RMS Environmental Sciences Program students have been visiting many South Florida Water Management District sites. Recently, students traveled to Dupuis ...Students have been studying water q uality and learning what real professionals do to protect our water supply.

Course of Study:

Environmental Science I: Introduces students to basic ecological concepts including biodiversity, ecosystems, natural resources while engaging them in a variety of lab and field activities.

Environmental Science II: focuses on Florida ecology. Students learn about estuaries, oceans, lakes and the Everglades, etc. Students are actively involved in a variety of lab and field experiments and use technology to record and transmit data to research scientists.

Environmental Science III: Concepts developed in the previous courses will be extended to include global issues such as: global warming, acid rain, biodiversity, etc. Field research and participation in conservaton projects is heavily emphasized.
Geographic Information Systems (GIS): Students use professional geographical mapping applications to create topographical maps based on collected data.

RMS' Pre-Medicine program is considered the best in the county. Students, who complete the high school credit Honors class in 8th grade, are recruited by all of the high school medical magnets. See the Pre-Medical site.

Course of Study:

Introduction to Health Occupations and Body Management: Students learn basic medical concepts relating to experiimental research, anatomy and physiology, terminiology, nutrition, and sports medicine.

Discovery of Medical Science and Related Careers:Students are introduced to a variety of traditional medical careers while completing Internet researcy on medical topics. Problem solving and critical thinking skills are requird during laboratories featuring real dissections.

Exploring the Wide World of Medicine (High School Credit, Honors)
or Understanding the Wide World of Medicine (reg.): Students are introduced to advanced scientific and laboratory techniques related to a career in the medical field. The Honors course requires a supervised clinical rotation in a medical facility.

RMS Technology Magnet

Course of Study:

Introduction to Computers:
students are introduced to basic computer concepts and keyboarding in the 6th grade.

Introduction to Careers in Technology: students are introduced to the different careers available today in the world of technology.
Introduction to Computer Applications, 1 & 2: students learn basic and advanced Microsoft Office applications including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Access.

Business Systems Technology (High School Credit):
Advanced eighth grade students are introduced to the technology used in businesses today while completing a high school credit course.

Emerging Technology I (PC Tech Support) - semester course introducing students to computer hardware and troubleshooting. Students learn using hands on activities on real computers.

Emerging Technology II (Introduction to Networking) - students learn the basic components of networking while learning real world skills creating a class network.

Web and Graphic Design - students learn web design and animation using professional software applications from Macromedia.
